School News
Because childhood obesity has tripled in the past thirty years, Acorn Montessori Schools has teamed with the Active & Healthy Schools Program. Through the Carol M. White Physical Education Grant, our schools have acquired equipment and our teachers have received training from Dr. Pangrazi, originator of the Active & Healthy Schools Program. Acorn's P.E. program is designed to be a comprehensive and versatile solution to meeting the federal requirements and improving student health. Acorn's implementation focuses on three key wellness issues:
- Promoting activity through the school day and beyond
- Teaching good nutrition and eating habits
- Raising sun-safety awareness.
In addition to teaching the Montessori philosophy; Acorn also uses Saxon, a traditional curriculum that focuses on mathematics, phonics and reading. Both Montessori and Saxon are currently taught from Pre-K through 8th grade, in a low teacher-to-student ratio.
Acorn Montessori Charter Schools in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Education provides Gifted Education.
Acorn Montessori offers a State-approved curriculum with NCLB approval that also specializes in the Gifted Program, Spanish, Technology, Computers, and Physical Education. Students experience their studies by participating in many field trips to explore science and the arts.
Prior Year's Highlights
Catalina Island Marine Institute Cherry Cove trip for 5th grade One of our 5th graders favorite field trips in the past was Catalina. One of our former students wrote this about her experience:
Catalina Island was a beautiful place to explore. We embarked upon a science adventure that taught marine science and island ecology.
We explored the underwater gardens while snorkeling. We learned about the islands geological history while hiking beautiful trails. We identified several of the islands flora and fauna. And, best of all, we were able to take an up-close-and-personal look at many of the creatures living in the ocean with the help of touch tank aquariums.
Take a look at pictures from this memorable experience at left.
